What types of health insurance options are available for those individuals (under 65) whose employer does not offer it?
These major medical plans are available during the open enrollment period each year from November 1st – Dec 15th. For those who qualify for special enrollment, these plans are available throughout the year.
The best part about these plans are guaranteed acceptance with no pre-existing condition restrictions, and no limits on annual or lifetime coverage, maternity and new born coverage.
The negative side of these plans include high deductibles and very high premiums unless you qualify for subsidy. In addition, most are HMO plans with limited networks.
This plan is a lower cost alternative to major medical plans with similar benefits. Depending on your state, you will need to renew these plans every 6-24 months.
Key advantages to these plans include the lowest monthly premiums and availability all year round’. Most of these plans are PPO plans that allow more participating provider choices.
However, you do have to qualify for these plans based on medical history and pre-existing conditions are never covered. Every 6-24 months you have to re-qualify.
The Defined Benefits Plan is another lower cost alternative to major medical plans. These plans pay specified benefits for covered illnesses and accidents. This option is permanent and you can keep it until Medicare eligibility.
The greatest advantage to this plan, is lower monthly premium than major medical plans and they are also available all year around.
However, you do have to qualify based on medical history, but pre-exisiting conditions are covered after 12 months (maternity coverage not included).
